Testimonial from Mrs Bon Pei Woon whose son Kevin Mok Jia Wen underwent Cochlear Implant Surgery
Indication: Severe to profound sensorineural deafness.
An incision is made behind the ear and a mastoidectomy is drilled followed by access created to the inner ear (cochlea), and insertion of the electrode into the cochlea. This is a semi-implantable device as although the implant is affixed under the skin, the microphone and processor are outside the skin, communicating with the internally implanted prosthesis via a magnetic interface.
United Kingdom National Institute for Health & Clinical Excellence (NICE) Guidelines for Bilateral Cochlear Implantation:
A cochlear implant in one ear is recommended as a possible option for anyone with severe to profound deafness if they do not get enough benefit from hearing aids after trying them for 3 months. Cochlear implants in both ears are recommended for the following groups with severe to profound deafness only if they do not get enough benefit from hearing aids after trying them for 3 months, with the implants both placed during the same operation, or in separate procedures:
- children
- adults who are blind or have other disabilities which mean that they depend upon hearing sounds for spatial awareness
Some patients have lost the ability to hear high frequency sounds but can still hear some low frequency sounds. They may benefit from a special type of implant called Electric Acoustic Stimulation.
