Indication: Severe to profound sensorineural deafness in one ear with normal hearing in the other (single-sided deafness).  Conductive deafness or mixed deafness with only a mild sensorineural deafness component.

For severe to profound sensorineural deafness in one ear with normal hearing in the other, the Bonebridge implant is placed on the 'bad' side and the impulses are transmitted to the opposite functioning cochlea to assist with the head shadow effect, hearing in noisy situations and sound localisation disabilities suffered by those with single-sided deafness.  In the case of conductive deafness the ‘hearing block’ is completely overcome by the Bonebridge Implant.  In the case of mixed deafness, if the sensorineural component is mild the Bonebridge Implant is able to amplify the sensorineural component also.

This involves a shorter operation than a cochlear or middle ear implant.  It involves incising the skin behind and above the ear and attaching a vibrating prosthesis to the skull, without any actual middle or inner ear surgery.  The implant vibrates the skull and hence the cochlea.  The implant itself is completely covered by skin and vibrations are directed towards the skull.  Hence there are no long-term skin infection problems or cleaning required.

There is a slim circular discreet combined external microphone and processor similar to the Vibrant Soundbridge Middle Ear Implant (placed above the hair line and outside the skin), which communicates with the internally implanted prosthesis via a magnetic interface.
