Ossiculoplasty

Indication: Conductive hearing loss due to a break in the link of the middle ear bones.

This operation reconnects the ear drum to the inner ear using a piston.  The postoperative hearing level will depend on a stable functional connection in the middle ear and also good / ‘reasonable’ inner ear function.  Ossiculoplasty can also allow hearing improvement without the need for a hearing aid and hence allow the ear canal to be left open.

Two types:

The Partial Ossicular Reconstruction Prosthesis (PORP) is used if the Stapes bone suprastructure is present (Stirrup arch present).  It connects the ear drum to the Stapes head.

The Total Ossicular Reconstruction Prosthesis (TORP) is used when the Stapes bone suprastructure is absent (Stirrup arch absent).  It connects the ear drum to the Stapes footplate.
